Khiva was a minor oasis city until Tamerlane destroyed the dominant city of the region, Kunya-Urgench.  After Tamerlane's empire collapsed, Khiva became the capital of the Khiva Khanate in 1592.  The Khans remained independent of Russia until 1873, and were known as the most backward and cruel in all of Central Asia.
