Separated from the USSR in 1991, Turkmenistan was ruled by Saparmyrat Niyazov until his death in late 2006. He proclaimed himself, Turkmenbashi, head of the Turkmen. He created a cult of personality that identified him as the Great One and resulted in his picture being placed anywhere that there was not enough room for a statue.
